Vevey and its area

Vevey is a town located on the northern shore of the Lake of Geneva (Lac Léman), in the Canton of Vaud, in a region called "la Riviéra". There are around 15'000 inhabitants in Vevey (in 2015).

The climate of Vevey is semi-continental. In the summer, temperatures can climb up to around 35 degrees Celisus and winter temperatures range between 0 and -10 degrees Celsius.

Vevey has many museums and other interesting activities.

Alimentarium Museum

(closed for renovation until 2016)

The Nestlé foundation opened this museum dedicated to the alimentation. One discovers there a permanent exhibition about cooking, eating and digesting. And a part of the museum also tells the story of Nestlé.

There is a cooking workshop for the children aged between 6 and 12 years old (for birthdays) with special entertainments. On top, the birthday child gets to take home the cake he baked.

Winegrowers Brotherhood Museum (Musée de la confrérie des vignerons)

This museum is dedicated to the Winegrowers Festival. This celebration usually takes place every 25 years. Its whole idea is to pay tribute to the viniculture. A magnificiant spectacle is prepared for this special occasion, It usually takes over a year to prepare it and the actors are most of the time residents from the Riviéra area. The celebration takes place around three weeks long on the "Grande Place du Marché". The next celebration will take place in 2019, 20 years after the last one, which took place in 1999.

Swiss Camera Museum (Musée suisse de l’appareil photographique)

The museum tells about the history of the photographers and of the photography, about its invention and the diverse techniques used in photography. One finds there an impressive amount of images and tools, among them some that visitors can try out. The exhibition is permanent.

It is possible to organise birthday parties for children in the museum (with special animation).

Folk markets (marchés folkloriques)

Folk markets take place every Saturdays in July and August on "la Grande Place du marché" (in 2015: from the 11th of July until the 29th of August). It is a very much appreciated venue, where the residents of the Riviéra meet each other and share a friendship glass of wine. Every Saturday, one can taste the wine from a vineyard by buying a glass which will be fulled as many times as you want for an amount of CHF 10.-. There is of course also the possibility to buy this wine...

Streets Artists' Festival (festival des artistes de rue)

The Street Artists' Festival takes place each summer during three days. These artists come from whole over the world and presents their shows in the streets of Vevey.

This festival takes place in the penultimate week in August. In 2015: from the 21st to the 23rd of August.

Nestlé's administrative building (bâtiment administratif de Nestlé)

The global headquarters of Nestlé unfortunately can't be visited, but everyone can enter it and do some shopping in the shop situated in the ground floor.

Charlie Chaplin's and his wife Oona's Grave (Tombe de Charlie Chaplin et de sa femme Oona)

Charlie Chaplin's Grave is in the graveyard of Corsier-sur-Vevey where he lived until his death in 1977.

Chaplin's World (Musée de Charlie Chaplin)
This museum will open in spring 2016.

It will be located in the Manor de Ban, which is the place where Charlie Chaplin used to live. There will be over 3'000 square meters to discover and experiment alltogether the scenography, cinematography, multimedias and the virtual world, all of these accompanied by laughs and emotions. A new exhibition hall will be situated in the heart of a 14-hectares domain with beautiful gardens, pathways and terrasses and its astonishing sight over the lake of Geneva and the montains nearby.

Montreux (5 km from Vevey)

Montreux-Jazz festival

The festival takes place from the first Friday of July and lasts for two weeks. The concerts take place either indoors or outdoors near the quays. Lots of very well-known artists perform there, among them Lady Gaga in 2015.

Veytaux (10 km from Vevey)

Château de Chillon

This castle tells the story of the Savoie family, but also of its more recent story in the time it belonged to the Canton of Bern and of its most recent story in the Canton of Vaud. It is often being renovated. It can be visited alone or with a guide.

Where to sleep ?

There are two big 5 stars hotels alongside the lake and lots of hôtels with much more affordable prices in the town.

A new 4 stars hotel called "Hôtel Modern Times" dedicated to Charlie Chaplin will open in October 2015 in Saint-Légier.
